WHAT IS A DOODLE

Doodles are a “designer dog,” a hybrid dog resulting from breeding a Golden Retriever, Bernese Mountain Dog or an Australian Sheppard with a Poodle. They are crossed with the goal of acquiring desired traits from each breed. The Goldendoodle is intelligent, affectionate and friendly.  Bernedoodles tend to be highly intelligent, hardworking when necessary, loyal, and just a bit goofy.  Australian Sheppards are known for being sweet, loyal, faithful and affectionate. Poodle's are extremely bright, highly trainable, loyal and well known for their minimal shedding.

SIZE

A Doodles height and weight will vary depending on parental lineage. 

• Toy/Petite Doodles (small) are typically below 14″ (measured from the shoulder to the paw) and below 25 pounds. 
• Miniature Doodles are typically 14″ – 17″ (measured from the shoulder to the paw) and between 26 – 35 lbs.  
• Medium Doodles are typically 17″ – 21″ (measured from the shoulder to the paw) and between 36 – 50 lbs. 
• Standard Doodles are typically over  21” (measured from the shoulder to the paw)  and 51 or more lbs. 

Females tend to be smaller than males in both weight and height. Doodles often appear larger due to their thick coat.  

Note: estimated size of a puppy by a breeder is an educated guess; therefore, a puppy’s final size may vary somewhat from a breeder’s initial calculation.  

TYPES OF DOODLES

• F1 = Golden Retriever/Bernese or Australian Sheppard x Poodle 
• F1B = F1 Doodle x Poodle 
• F2 = F1 Doodle x F1 Doodle 
• Multigen = Two Doodle parents – One parent has to be an F1B or multigen. A Poodle bred to a multigen Doodle also constitutes a multigen.  

COATS

Doodle coats come in three different varieties: Wavy, Curly, and Straight. The coat type is determined largely by the amount of Poodle in the parental lineage. However, a litter can have different types of coats. Doodles coat and color may change as they get older.  They will typically get lighter and have more curl.  

• Wavy/Shaggy – most common and is thought to be the easiest to maintain. It is usually low to non-shedding. This coat requires brushing a minimum of once a week.
• Curly –. This is due to the amount of poodle in the parental lineage and can range from loose to tight curl. It requires more maintenance to keep from matting - Brushing/Combing at least 3x per week.  
• Straight - less common than shaggy or curly coats.   It looks more like the Golden Retriever coat. It is very easy to maintain and requires minimal brushing. This coat type is usually low to moderate shedding. The face will look more like a golden/Bernese as opposed to poodle.  

COLOR

Doodles come in many different colors. Goldendoodle’s coloring is determined by the parents – especially the poodle parent. The Golden brings shades of cream, apricot and red to the breed. The Bernedoodle has a more consistent look than either the Golden or Poodle.  The Australian has a merle gene and comes in shades of black, chocolate, and tri. The Poodle includes cream, apricot, red; and contribute to the black, chocolate (dark brown), silver and gray coloring to the Goldendoodle coat.  Doodles colors also include "parti" and "parti factored" colors. Parti doodles are mostly white (at least 50%) with color splashed in. Parti-factored (AKA abstract, mismarks or markings) doodles are colored with some white on face, chest, feet or tail. Fur color will usually get lighter as puppies mature.

ACTIVITY

Doodles are energetic and athletic dogs. They love to play and require a modest amount of exercise. They get along well with other dogs and are non-aggressive.  

GROOMING

Because Doodles shed very little, they will need to be brushed regularly (every 3 days to weekly - depending on coat length) to remove dead and dying hair and prevent matting. An occasional bath will help keep their skin and coat in good condition, especially when they are groomed regularly between baths. It is a good idea to trim the hair that grows over their eyes. Toenails should be trimmed as in any other breed. Professional groomers are available to perform any of these task that owners are not comfortable doing.  

TEMPERAMENT

Doodles are friends to everyone and strangers to no one, which makes them an ideal choice as a family dog. Due to their affable, outgoing personalities, they also make excellent companions for people with disabilities. They are cheerful, trustworthy, gentle, affectionate, smart and highly trainable animals that have a keen desire to please. When properly socialized, Doodles get along famously with kids, strangers and other companion animals.  Goldendoodles don't have a particularly strong prey drive and can be quite compatible with cats and smaller dogs, when introduced in a good way. These three Doodles are social dogs that thrive in the presence of people. Like all dogs, Doodles can get into mischief and develop behavioral problems if they are frequently left alone for long periods of time.  

ACTIVITY LEVEL

Doodles benefit from a large, safely enclosed area in which to romp and run around. They also enjoy daily walks.  

WHY BUY A MULTI-GENERATIONAL PUPPY?​

Since genetics is random, all Doodles have attributes that land somewhere on the spectrum between their two parents. Multi-generational puppies give you the strongest chance for a Doodle that lands near the middle of the spectrum, allowing for those desirable characteristics. Because it is a multi-generational pup, we can predict with more certainty what the puppies will look like, what their temperament will be, and that they will be healthy and intelligent. They are also more likely to have coats that will be allergy-friendly.
